Garmin Vehicle Power Cable Review

Garmin Vehicle Power Cable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No matter how much I want continuous power to my Garmin I just can't pay that much for a little power cable that costs probably $1 to make. It's the principle of it.

Instead I did some research and discovered a nifty little item called a USB car adapter for as low as two dollars! - then I can just use the USB cord that came with the unit! Only the wires needed for supplying power are used and not those for the data (they are separate wires in the cord). For more info do a search on Wikipedia for USB, and Goggle and right here at Amazon for USB car chargers.

I found a great dual charging unit elsewhere for $15 including shipping. With the dual unit I can charge my eTrex Vista HCx and phone or PDA, both at the same time. Just make sure the power output is 4.75 to 5.25V, that's the USB power specification. All but one of the units I found where in the proper power range though one was 7.2V, which is too high.

BTW, the little connector at the eTrex is also a USB connecter, just a different type (shape) then you may be used to. They call it a `mini USB,' while the larger one on the other end (of the cord that came with the unit) is a `USB type A', the same you typically see for computers and flash cards. It doesn't matter though, they are just differently shaped connectors that do exactly the same thing.

Don't pay Garmin's outrageous prices. Get a USB car adapter and power your eTrex through the USB cord supplied with your unit. It's the same as when you plug your unit into your computer's USB port and the computer supplies the unit with 5V power. Enjoy

I was looking for a case for my eTrex Vista CX, and couldn't find the traditional Garmin one on Amazon. This one has a kind of 'ugly chic' to it.

This case is flexible but quite resilient. It has a soft, nylon-type fabric lining and a textured rubber exterior. It is very easy to grip, and adds little weight or size to the GPS unit.

The case opens up like a clamshell, with the hinge at the top side of the GPS. The hinge is ~1 inch wide, and looks like it's stretched when the case is shut - this worries me that it will eventually fail. The two halves of the clamshell do not seal where they meet, but they rest together fairly uniformly.

The case is held closed at the bottom end by the lanyard, which is attached to the bottom half of the clamshell by being looped through two holes. It also passes through the end of the top half of the clamshell and is pulled tight by one of those plastic spring toggles. It looks like this arrangement is strong enough to leave the GPS dangling round your neck, but it's too heavy for my liking to do that anyway. I would probably just leave the unit clipped to the shoulder strap of my rucksack and use the lanyard as a safety chain.

The case must be opened up to allow the GPS batteries to be changed, which is easy thanks to the spring toggle.

Included in the package are two little self-adhesive transparent plastic rectangles which are for use as screen protectors. The instructions say to put a few drops of water on the GPS screen before applying the plastic, to allow it to be moved around. This didn't work. The stuff is so sticky that it sticks to the GPS screen the instant that it touches it. Squeegying the protector with a credit card as advised does not make the plastic completely transparent, so it mars the visibility of the LCD slightly. I may end up removing it.

One cool thing is that the rubber case adds enough height to the top surface of the GPS that the joystick/enter button is now recessed. It was a constant annoyance to me that the button would get pressed while the unit was in my pocket and create unwanted waypoints. Hopefully this is now a thing of the past.

Garmin eMap Hiking GPS Review

Garmin eMap Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don't get me wrong, I love this GPS. For me a city boy, this thing is great. However, that being said, there are LOTS of extras you will need, to make this thing work the way you'd like. First off, the base map that comes with it is good only for medium to long trips. So right off the bat if you plan to use it in the metropolitan area and want any kind of detail you need to buy $160 bucks worth of maps, and $100 of extra RAM to hold the maps you download to the unit. Now anyone in their right mind would assume after having paid $180 for the GPS and $160 for the maps and $100 for the extra RAM that you might get a PC to GPS cable right? Wrong. You get to pay another $30 to $60 for the data cable. Want a cigarette adapter? Take out your already shrinking wallet and flop down another $30 to $60. After having shelled out over half a thousand bucks, I still dont have a case. Eh, whats another $20 for a nice leather case. After saying all that I am happy with the product, it is very nice and suits my needs to a tee. I just wish I knew I would have to spend over $560 to get the functionality I thought I was getting for $180.

Garmin eTrex Legend C Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Garmin eTrex Legend C Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Two months ago my family and I joined about 2.3 million others in leaving the Texas Gulf Coast as Hurricane Rita came our way.The road system could not handle that much traffic and a 3 hour drive turned into a 16 hour nightmare.Roads were clogged beyond capacity and I used a county map to navigate along back roads (gravel, shell, dirt and cowpath) to get ahead of a few thousand cars stopped on highways. That worked fine until the map ran out. Then we were stuck in traffic and melting heat.As we sat there I saw other people using nearby roads with confidence and I assumed they had better maps than I did.I was right, but their maps were on their GPS devices. The decision to buy a GPS was made then and there.

I did a lot of research trying to decide which device I wanted to buy and soon found myself lost in a sea of varying opinions.Right after reading a review that extolled the virtues of one unit I would read another that completely trashed it.Eventually I decided that the reviews here and at other sites were not going to give me the answer I was looking for and I would have to buy a device and try it for myself.Using reviews and some common sense I decided that the Garmin eTrex Legend C was a good bet for a trial and ordered it from Amazon.

After giving it a real workout this last week I have to report that this device is a dream. When I chose the Legend C it was my intention that be our introduction into GPS navigation on road and off as well as to use for Geocaching.

We began using it the day we got it by entering an address and navigating to a friend's house on the other side of town. What amazed me was that it chose the same route I would have used, (from among several that were not as desireable).A few days later we used it on a 300 mile trip and it performed flawlessly. It even found our destination, a place in the middle of nowhere, past the end of the last marked road and in a pasture accessible only by a ranch road with no name (that was on the map I downloaded into the device from Garmin City Select Map CD).We used it in the field for several days and my son played with it almost constantly. Before we left to return home we used it to find our first geocache.

The Pros - Great battery life.I do recommend the 12 volt car power cable option because the backlight times out to conserve battery life.We used it for a week (kids sat there and played with it for hours trying to discover all of the features) and it's still on the first set of batteries.

- Easy to read display.Like most other color displays it washes out a little when direct sun is shining on it, but unlike the color display on my cellular telephone it only takes a small adjustment in angle to see the readout well. The display is sharp and automatically changes at dusk and dawn to make itself easier to view in different light conditions.

- Amazingly accurate. When navigating, the device provides warning of upcoming turns by beeping and changing the display. As you get closer to the turn it displays a countdown to the number of seconds before the turn.We were astounded by how accurately it marked the turns to the second.

- Quality of optional maps from the City Select CD.We were out in rough country where even the marked county roads are unpaved and barely maintained. The number of no-name ranch roads scraped out by graders, or are trails marked only by the track of other vehicles that use it, are how people get around once off the highway.Other than some of the smaller tracks this map found every gravel or shell private road we came across. We even found some roads that we had not known existed before as we saw them on the map display while driving around.

Ability to maintain contact with satellites. If you plan to use this in the car I recommend that you turn it on outside the car first and let it find the satellites. It seems to work faster that way. However, while it may take longer for the Legend to find the satellites from inside a vehicle, no matter how it finds them once it acquires the satellite signals it hangs on to them from inside the car.The only way we ever got it to completely lose the signals was to hold it down well below the line of sight from any window.I purchased the optional vehicle mount that suction cups to the windshield and I always had a great signal.Outside, under medium cover, it held signals without a problem.I did not have major cover to deal with so I can't say what would happen in a forest.I expect that the Legend would have the same problems as any GPS would when used under a heavy canopy of trees.

Cons - The device uses a small pointer button to maneuver through options on many of the menus. When trying to manipulate the pointer and then press it to enter an option, it is easy to make mistakes and make the cursor move when you meant to press "enter".A minor hassle but one you should be aware of.

The display is small for use as in vehicles.I could read it allright, but if I were using the device only for in car navigation I would a larger readout. But, as I said I chose this unit to perform a variety of GPS jobs.

Pro and Con - The maps from the CD were fantastic.I have yet to find an error. The "unlocking" process was not as much a pain as I expected from reading other reviews, but it was not as user friendly as I would like.

Maps are loaded by sections and urban areas really eat up a lot ofmemory. My next unit will have more memory or an expansion slot to add memory via SD or CF cards.

Final analysis. If you are looking for a GPS device to perform a wide variety of tasks on and off road then I highly recommend the eTrex Legend C.As an entry level unit it is expensive, but the cheaper devices had limitations that I was not prepared to live with.More expensive units offer more memory and other things that are nice to have, and of course you can find devices that are more specifically designed and useful for more narrowly focused applications.

Magellan eXplorist 200 - GPS receiver - hiking Review

Magellan eXplorist 200 - GPS receiver - hiking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these low-end GPS systems for use outdoors and was very impressed with the no-frills but quality menu design and simple and intuitive operation.

I've taken the Explorist on a number of trips and found that it did well when I was driving along with the GPS unit sitting on my dash or when wandering in the Sierras where I live. I took it on a trip to San Francisco with my girlfriend and we used it to navigate us back to my parking spot with zero difficulties. Don't let the low price fool you... Magellen did a nice job with this little beauty. I have dropped it a number of times, once it fell about 20 feet and survived with zero marks and works as good as new.

I've also used the unit to find my way on back-woods trails and to mark my positions and visited checkpoints. Takes a bit of re-learning to get used to setting checkpoints, but once you get the hang of it, this tool shines and does a good job of getting you back to where you started.

Last year, I used it to help chart our course when I was blocker for the company motorcycle group on our yearly ride. I don't drive motorcycles but drive my sports car as the water and luggage hauler and general navigation and electronics/communications support person. The Explorist came through repeatedly in showing us our exact location and kept us from taking a few wrong turns. I coupled the Explorist with pre-printed maps with coordinates printed on them so that it was quite clear where we were at all times.

While the color displays on GPS units are neat, the black and white display on the Explorist does seem to sip battery power lightly and I was getting about 2 - 3 days of use out of batteries with near constant usage. On the motorcycle trip I kept the unit powered down until I needed to check position, so for a ten day trip, I only changed batteries once. I'd recommend using the newer rechargables with 15 minute charge time to save $$$.

The only thing I wish was a bit different would be the little steel screw that you have to twist off to get the battery compartment open. Not sure why they make the little twist piece so hard to get big fingers around, but a small sharp tool or hook is all you need to pull that piece out and then you can twist the screw off. The big thing is to NOT lose that screw once you have the case apart!

I do thing it is a good investment to get a small leather pouch for the GPS so that you do bang it around too badly in rough terrain. Yes, it is extremely tough and well built, but hey, it cost $$$ and why not keep it looking good? ;>)

There is also a small hole at the top for threading a strap through so you won't lose the GPS. Suggest a bit of leather cord to push through and hook to a belt or whatever.

Perhaps one day I'll replace the GPS for a more capable unit, but for now, this thing really does the job and I'm pleased with it.I consider it an essential travel tool now.

5 stars - Well built and for the money, quite the steal. My hat is off to Magellen!

Cobra GPS 1000 DLX 1.8-Inch Portable GPS Navigation Review

Cobra GPS 1000 DLX 1.8 inch Portable GPS Navigation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just recently purchased the Cobra GPS1000DLX and am extremely disappointed.

Pros: Hardware - The unit is compact (about the size of an average PDA)

Cons: Software (Both on the Unit and included software)
Hardware - Serial (RS232) interface

All I can say about the software on the unit is that it's functional.Other then that it will take awhile to get used to and is not very user friendly.

As for the included Rand McNally Street Finder software, it is obvious that this software was written around 1999 and has had no updates. Cobra/Rand are really trying to squeeze there pennies out of it as long as they can.Just trying to install the software on a computer with XP can be a challenge I've found.

*Warning* Windows XP SP2 will sometimes wipe out a file that this software requires to install. Let me save you some time, it's not listed as a known problem on there website, you have to call Rand McNally for the solution. (That's all Cobra will tell you to do)

*Recommendation - Bring some coffee and donuts with you before trying to install. Once the CD is inserted and the install program started, it took an average of 5 minutes before the pre-install program was done and the actual install program started.

Once the software is installed, it looks more at home on a Windows 98 machine and functions just as it looks. After creating a map and trying to download it the GPS unit it told me it needed the "Data" CD. (*Note - This seems more like something that should be part of the initial install) Let's just say that it also took me a little while to figure out that it wanted it in the first CD drive on my system, not the drive I used to install it. After getting the Disc in the right drive it started coping the files it needed (There was enough time for another coffee break).Once the transfer between the software the GPS unit began, I noticed the progress bar was barely moving (Yet another coffee break) so I used that time to reflect on the benefits of USB vs Serial and why Serial is OUTDATED for consumer products.

Once completed with that task I created a Route between two points. The software traced my route completely inaccurately (Lets just say my starting point was approx 15+ meters from the actual route, not just one point but the whole route)

This is good unit for a teenager or young camper or as a gift. Other then that, I recommend getting one of the other GPS units out there.
