Garmin Forerunner 101 Waterproof Running GPS Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The Garmin Forerunner 101 is exactly the same as the popular Forerunner 201, with a couple of small changes.Being the case, I won't review the actual product since everything that needs to be said about it's GPS features can be found in the reviews for the Forerunner 201.
The most notable difference with the 101 is that it uses 2 AAA batteries istead of being rechargeable like the 201. At first I thought this was a big detraction to buying it, but it's really not that bad.Battery life is decent, although not as high as with the 201, which gets up to 13 hours of use on a full charge. But if you're not a marathon runner and just run a few miles on your runs, this shouldn't matter much. The only hassle is having the batteries go dead during the middle of a run, which really sucks if you're into knowing exactly how far you've gone. You have to keep an eye on the battery life before going out. The batteries don't really effect the weigh or size of the product though.
The second major difference is that this unit does not interface with your PC.This also isn't too big of a problem because, currently, the Garmin software is really lacking.Hopefully they will improve on it with time, but the PC software is nowhere near as nice as it could be at this stage. You can view a graph of your altitude for your run, and graphs of your pace and speed, and that's about it.Otherwise the software is really crummy. You can't even zoom in on your map like you can with the actual unit.
If you're serious about running, I would highly suggest the Forerunner 201 over this product, mainly because the price difference is so negligible. You can find the 201 for only about $20 more than this model, and the extra money is well worth the rechargeability of the 201 and freedom from the batteries. But if you really can't afford the cost, you're not going to be hurting too much with the 101.

Product Description:
The Forerunner 101 offers athletes an easy-to-read display and integrated GPS sensor that provides precise speed, distance, and pace data--all in one compact unit that straps to your wrist. It's a lightweight, accurate training assistant with performance tracking, auto-lap, auto-pause and more.

The Forerunner 101 is easy to use right out of the box and it delivers the benefits of GPS technology.
Although it lacks the rechargeable battery and PC connectivity features of the Forerunner 201, the 101 retains all of the other great features of the 201, at an even more affordable price. The Virtual Partner feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.
Almost as important as the training device itself are the accessories to integrate it with your active lifestyle. If you're into cycling, the best way to keep an eye on your GPS while you ride is with a bike mount bracket that straps to the handlebars of your bike, motorcycle, or whatever you're traveling with for easy viewing.
Other Forerunner 101 features:

Mark specific locations, and then look-up and navigate to these points using an electronic map.
Amount of calories burned can be tracked and calculated over the course of a workout.
Lap history--such as lap time, lap distance, and average pace--can be stored for 5000 laps.
Performance data can be automatically archived and calculated to provide an accurate record.
Automated stopwatch provides auto-lap and auto-pause features.
Pace whistle sounds alert when you begin traveling slower or faster than your desired pace.
Time and distance whistles can be set to sound when you reach a specified duration or distance in your workout.

Auto Menu: Timer pauses when you stop running. Auto lap logs your performance over a predetermined distance.

History: Review training history by day or week.

Map: Navigate back to the start or to a stored location.

Virtual Partner: Set time, pace, and distance goals, and train with a "virtual partner."

Garmin cf Que 1620 North America (010-00290-00) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I've been using the cf Que 1620 in my HP iPAQ for over 4 months now and am very satisfied with it's performance.Unlike the previous reviewer, I have not had major issues with the GPS unit locating satellites.I have used it in many areas of the US and Canada.

For the initial setup, it is very important that the correct Base Map for the area that you are physically located in is installed, otherwise, the GPS cannot coordinate with the satelite with the mapping software properly. Normally you would choose the North American base maps. The unit shipped from Amazon only includes the North American City Select maps which are needed to get local roads, landmarks, and Points of Interest.Maps for other areas of the world are available from Garmin. In addition, the documentation is fairly complete and will explain how to get the GPS to find the satellite quicker under "Initializing the GPS Receiver" in the Applications Guide.

If you purchase the unit and it comes with the version 5.0 of the City Select maps, contact Garmin and they can get you upgraded to the current version. This happened to me and since I had purchased the unit just before the upgrade occurred, they upgraded me for free.I thought this showed excellent customer service. The upgraded maps had all of the exit number changes that have occurred in my area as well as new street names for new housing developments.

Some basics: Your Pocket PC based PDA will need to have an empty CompactFlash (CF) slot for the GPS antenna that comes with the unit (it also has 64 MB of memory space in the same assembly). Since my iPAQ had a Secure Digital slot (like many PDAs) but no CF slot, I had to purchase a CF sleeve for the iPAQ as well.I'm tempted to buy a iPAQ 2215 since it has both slots in the case (no need for the sleeve).

A couple of specifics: It is a very good idea to make sure you are running MS Pocket PC 2003 operating system. My iPAQ originally came with Pocket PC 2002 and the Garmin had many problems locking up along with very slow performance. Once I upgraded, the difference was tremendous. The Garmin CF Que 1620 is now very stable and fast. The bigger the memory card, the more maps you can store. For example, a 512 MB SD card is able to hold the Northeast & Mid Atlantic U.S. from Virginia up to Maine, the Dallas - Ft. Worth area, Southern California, Idaho, and Utah (with some room to spare).

The Negatives:
- Having to add the CF sleeve made the unit thicker than normal. As a result, the supplied dash mount does not hold the unit as securely as it normally would (it still is adequate though)

- The speaking volume for directions is too low if you have a noisy interior (or if you play your music loud). I found two solutions for this. 1) I bought a set of portable powered speakers and connected them through the headphone jack. 2) Bought one of the Belkin Tunecast II Mobile transmitters to broadcast the directions through the radio (which I take on trips with a rental car - nice and small).

The Positives:
- Excellent customer support. As I mentioned above.

- The unit responds very quickly when a re-route is required (especially with all of the construction that is going on seemingly wherever I'm going...) It always gets me back on-course. Its great to get around traffic jams too.

- Lots of flexibility in choosing how the maps will be displayed while driving. For example, the default is for the unit to zoom the map back and forth depending on your location while I prefer to see more detail of the side streets along the path that the car is taking.Uncheck the Auto-zoom box if you don't want the zooming.

- I tested it head-to-head against the Hertz NeverLost GPS system. It was as good and at times much better during my test in Southern California. The Garmin user interface was much easier to use.

- Lots of POIs (Points of Interest). I'm on the road alot and I really appreciate how it can find my hotel, nearby restaurants, fast food, golf courses, airports, gas stations, etc. quickly and accurately.

- The unit also comes with a matching version of the software that loads on your PC. It is very convenient to create the Waypoints (which I can use as Origin or Destination points) on the PC, then have it download into the cf Que. From there, you just select the Waypoint and tell the Garmin to Route to It. It gives you the estimated time of arrival along with the mileage. You can also configure your iPAQ to show Turn-by-Turn instructions with a touch of a button.

Overall, it is an excellent unit. Now that I've used it for a bit of time (everything "high-tech" has a learning curve), I'm more impressed with it every time I use it. Even my techno friends are impressed. Well worth the money. As usual, Amazon got it to me quickly as well.

Garmin Dashboard Disk 2-Pack Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Bought a new car, so I needed new dashboard disk to mount my Nuvi. these seemed like a reasonable price for what appeared to be factory OEM disks.

When I received them I cleaned the dashboard with alcohol to make sure the adhesive would stick, removed the cover from the adhesive disk, and pressed it against the dashboard. Would not stick. I tried the other one. No-go. I touched the adhesive with my finger , and there was no adhesion - it did not feel sticky at all.

I contacted the seller for a refund, heard nothing. A week later sent another request for a refund, this time I got a refund.

Garmin Refurbished Nuvi 5000 Portable Car Navigation System - Silver Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Review for Garmin 5000

What's wrong with this product?Let me count the ways...Every time you stop the car, the device shuts down (no internal battery). When the car is started again, the Garmin takes a full three minutes to reboot & reacquire satellites.BOO!Additionally, when you wish to enter a destination, you start from scratch every time. You have to spell the city, provide the street number, and spell the street name.TomTom at least displays a list of previously used destinations that you can reselect if you want. The Garmin method is far more time consuming.BOO!Finally, the feature that prompted me to buy the Garmin in the first place (routing) doesn't work well.Even using "route optimization," the Garmin wants to drive you around the world to get to the destinations you've entered. It does NOT select the most efficient route, and if you miss or skip a single destination, the Garmin gets lost & goes crazy.BOO!

Overall, this product was a massive waste of money. The TomTom One that I have works significantly better.DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Garmin StreetPilot c550 Portable Navigator (0100052200) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The Garmin C550 is awesome. I've had mine for a few years now. Flew it to Nebraska, rented a car to get around Lincoln, took a trip to Branson Missouri and never got lost. Just put in the address and GO.

Only a few times I've had problems with it. One turn on the unit was too far down the road and into a field.Streets that have bends in them are sometimes considered TURNS. I think it's a matter of mapping and not the unit.

As with any mapping or location device, it's a tool and to be used along with common sense.

New maps come out periodically on DVD and the menu softwares are upgradeable through Garmins website for free.

This is the best money I've ever spent and Garmin, at this time, is constantly rated tops in Consumer Reports.
