Teletype 3100 Worldnav 3100 Deluxe Portable GPS Receiver Review

Teletype 3100 Worldnav 3100 Deluxe Portable GPS Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am agree with the other reviews: The turn locations can be quite off and the street names can be off.

I have been testing it with my wife's Magellan I brought 3 months ago.

The Magellan and the Teletype Premium side by side had interesting results.

Even with the Teletype having 12 million POI, the Magellan showed me like 35 points of interest (in real time) by Disneyland, CA.The teletype unit showed me 1 gas station (in real time).

Both the Magellan & Teletype unit failed to find In N Out (Burger Restaurant) as a POI [point of interest] without me physically pulling my hair out for 1/2 hour toying with both of them. The problem was: In N Out is spelled In-N-Out.I can not believe both manufacturers could not think of programming their software to recognize names with and without hyphens connecting the words.

Teletype could not find the Street Name: N Glassell, in Orange CA automatically. While Magellan has an advanced feature to only highlight letters of streets as you type in the name of the street. As you keep typing, the Magellan does a process of elimination and displays a list of only the streets that are left, before you finish typing. This is a really blow you out the door feature!!!

The Magellan doesn't do text to speech, but the Magellan even tells me that I arrived at my destination and what side of the street my destination is on.The Teletype doens't tell me I arrived as good as the Magellan.I finally noticed today I get a flag on the screen on the Teletype Prem. Which is kind of self defeating. I want to hear the directions to my location with text to speech while not having to look at the screen.

I brought 2 Teletype Prem., hoping to give both as gifts to my family in CA.The one person is legally blind, but can see enough to ride his bike to work sometimes.I felt I could give this Teletype Prem. GPS unit to him and take some of the pressure off his wife. Now I am very nervous about giving him the unit.

I put in a call today 7/1/07 to Teletype GPS, hopefully they got a patch, for the devices or I may have to return them and lose 25% restocking fee.

Even though I do not want to return the units.

I kind of got the hang of all the neat features now.Hopefully we can rectify the problem tomorrow.

Averatec Voya 320 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Averatec Voya 320 3.5 inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having never used a GPS before, and being on a limited budget, I was pleased to see the Averatec Voya 320 come up on a "Black Friday" sale. A quick check of my favorite computer magazine sites revealed favorable reviews. After 12 months of constant use, I can report that this unit is well worth having, especially for the price.

For the most part, I found the device routed me correctly in both busy urban and remote rural areas. There have only been a few missteps. On one occasion it sent me the wrong way up a one-way street. Another time it took me successfully across country to a brand new motel in a small town but then, after taking a day trip, couldn't get me back. A few times, the unit insisted on routing me on major roads, even though I kept telling it to bypass the nearby but parallel highway.

Speaking of following instructions, I found the unit's female voice to be pleasant and clear, with a slight Irish accent (interesting on the pronunciation of "third," for instance). There is no text-to-voice recognition of minor street names as you would find in more expensive products. Still, the Voya 320 gives a clear and reliable warning of an approaching intersection. If it says "Turn right in 500 feet," I know I should be slowing down and looking for a street entrance on my right.

Despite constant and relatively reliable use, I can't help but list several shortcomings:

- The unit can take a long time to acquire a signal, especially during heavy cloud cover.

- Sometimes it seems to get stuck entirely, and I have to press the reset button.

- The screen suffers from glare during the day, but is almost too bright at night, even when I turn the backlight way down.

- The only way to get map updates is to purchase a replacement SD card. Currently, this is around half the price of the original system.

Despite all that, the Voya 320 is still a good buy. If you are in the market for a more up-to-date, more full-featured product, then be prepared to spend more than twice the price of this budget GPS.

Garmin StreetPilot i2 2.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin StreetPilot i2 2.5 inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had a Garmin iQue 3600 for over 3 years. I recently bought the i2 for my wife. We just used it in Phoenix for a few days and I must say I'm considering getting the i2 for myself. The suction cup works well and it is very compact and connects to the DC power via the mini-USB port. It makes for a very compact traveling companion.

At first, I felt that the hard button controls and no touch screen would make the interface difficult to use. To be honest, it works better in most cases! The thumb wheel/button works great and the back button is intuitive like a browser. It picks up the sats fast and gets great reception. The B&W screen is easier to see in sunlight and is pretty sharp and surprising usable for the small size. The voice is loud (and adjustable) and we had little or no issues. I like the 3D mode but you can switch to 2D if you like that better.

I agree with other reviewers about one way streets and occasional longer than needed routes. Also, U turns are a fact of life in Phoenix and it usually doesn't factor in U turns as a possibility so it takes you down and around instead. However, adjustments can be made in the settings to look for or avoid highways and not to ignore U turns, so look there.

I find that mounting my iQue is a pain so I use an external antenna and a sand bag mount. Having to haul all that on trips was a pain. I'll take the i2 from now on as it is all in one and very packable. I can see how there would be issues on windshield placement so think about that before you buy. I had no trouble on 2 different rental cars. Make sure you press solidly in middle of back before flipping lever and it wont go anywhere.

All in all, when you factor in the small size, nice usability and the price, this one is definitely top of the list! If you want a unit you will likely use in your own car all the time, I would suggest the iQue in a hard mount or the C300 series. These have touch screens and allow you to slide scroll and such. But they are twice the money!

Product Description:
No larger than a baseball and priced with affordability in mind, the StreetPilot i2 GPS navigation system is a great fit for commuters, college students, and corporate travelers looking to experience the ease and enjoyment of satellite navigation for the first time. Don't let the small size fool you; the i2 boasts many of the same powerful functions as Garmin's premium vehicle GPS navigators.
The StreetPilot i2 features a unique and convenient click-to-enter scroll wheel and a back button that makes it easy to select a destination from the unit's menu-driven interface. It also offers voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions through a built-in speaker, and should you miss a turn, the i2 will automatically recalculate the route to put you back on course. And perhaps most conveniently, the unit moves easily from vehicle to vehicle thanks to the integrated suction cup mount, so you don't need to go through a cumbersome process each time you change cars.

The StreetPilot i2 is the monochrome-screened version in the i-series.

Voice prompts and a destination flag help you get to your next destination quickly and effeciently.

A convenient click-to-enter scroll wheel and a "back" button make it easy to select a destination. To get you from point A to point B, the StreetPilot i2 includes a MapSource City Select North America NT DVD, which contains mapping detail of the entire U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The DVD's nearly six million points of interest range from hotels and restaurants to gas stations and ATMs, along with local attractions such as amusement parks and museums. Simply load the City Select data onto the included 128 MB Transflash data card via a fast USB connection and you're set.
As an added benefit, you can now import customized points of interest with the help of Garmin's free POI Loader software. For instance, you can upload safety cameras or school zones, and then receive a warning if you are traveling too fast in these areas. In addition, an optional proximity-alert feature notifies you of upcoming custom POIs.
Maps are displayed on the i2's high-contrast backlit FSTN monochrome display, which includes a backlight for difficult lighting conditions. Motorists even have the choice of multiple perspectives--either a 3-D mapping angle or an overhead bird's-eye view. For added convenience, drivers can power the unit with either two AA batteries (six hours, typical use) or the included 12-volt adapter cable.
The StreetPilot i2 measures 3 x 2.74 x 2.15 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

What's in the Box
StreetPilot i2, America's Lite Routable base map, City Select North America DVD, PC/USB cable, 12-volt adapter cable, vehicle suction-cup mount, dashboard adhesive disk, 128 MB Transflash data card, setup guide, user's manual.

Lowrance iFinder H20 C 2.83-Inch Waterproof Marine GPS Review

Lowrance iFinder H20 C 2.83 inch Waterproof Marine GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this unit for about 18 months but have used it only 6-8 times - never in foul weather. It worked fine at first - with TOPO downloaded maps onto the MMC card and a Navionics card for marine use. Always locked on fairly quickly. Displayed maps beautifully. Now, after not using it for about 4 months (the batteries removed for safe storage) the unit will not lock onto satellites regardless of how long it's left on or despite performing soft and hard resets. The built-in Lowrance software on it is actually newer than what's on the latest Lowrance software update page - which makes no sense at all. Lowrance's minimum repair rate is $149.95 plus shipping since the 1 year warrenty has expired!! I might as well buy a new GPS - a non-Lowrance unit this time! The price and features are very attractive. But beware, I think it's a very inferior product in the long run.

Navigon N100 LOOX Sport GPS Review

Navigon N100 LOOX Sport GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No longer do I have to print maps, stuff them in my pocket, read them while I'm driving, and encounter the inaccuracy that so often comes from online direction maps. I simply type my address into my Pocket Loox, stick it on the dash and start driving. After over 50 trips to unknown destinations, the device has consistently guided me accurately. With the device's built in point of interest database I have found countless instances where I have been relieved from having to know my destination's address. Just type in the point of interest (restaurant, ATM, Hotel, train station, shopping center, tourist locations, schools, businesses, hospitals, movie theatres, government offices, etc.) and hit the "start navigation" button and you're on your way. A couple of times I have had arrived at my destination early and decided to hit a starbucks or an ATM that does not charge fees. I simply enter the interim destination and the device takes me there and back. Given that this destination database is in-part powered by Zagat, I have been able to find not only mundane destinations like an ATM, but to find entertainment destinations like jazz clubs, high quality restaurants, and tourist destinations.

The coolest thing about the loox over other devices I investigated is its portability. It's so small that I can stick it in my pocket and use it as I wander around my destination. This came in handy at an outdoor mall when I was looking for a specific store. By using its points of interest I was able to be directed to the nearest store for the items I was looking for. On a recent hiking trip, the device was very accurate in communicating our position as it related to the surrounding area and our base camp destination.

As with any GPS device, it is mandatory that you are not obstructed by things like roofs (the device cannot be initiated indoors). I live in an urban environment and I have never had a problem being inhibited by buildings or the like, but you need to be outside when you initiate a new trip.

I can't express enough how cool it is to stick this device in your pocket and go. In my car the maps are brilliant enough to easily read, but you really don't need to look at the screen because the voice commands tell you exactly where to turn and when - it even alerts you to the lane you should be in for upcoming turns and warns you when you may be violating speed limits. When I have been traveling for business, the device's knowledge of my location and its accuracy has guided me to countless meetings without any worries.

I did have one difficulty with the device where it stalled and I had to actually pull over and stop and restart the device (because I had become so reliant on its accuracy, I was dependant on it to take me to my destination). I had fortunately save my destination as a favorite and so I didn't have to re-enter the information, just select the favorite destination and hit "start navigation" and we were off. Other than that one time, it hasn't let me down. Cool Gadget!

Average Reviews:

Ok here is an expert review.I looked at speed in recalulating, speed in changing directions, voice and brightness.I give all a 4 to 5 rating.

1.The unit is slow recalulating, infact at times my GPS V was faster. Here is the trick. The memory(hd) is super large in this unit and all maps are install. All you have to do is go into the maps and uncheck the maps you do not need.I live on the east coast therefore I unchecked all westcoast, midwest and canada.Did speed test now unit is Twice as fast as my GPS V.Simple... When you need the other maps loaded just go in and check them.
Vocie is clear and loud.I am looking for a way to install into a fm modulator.
Screen is bright.
This unit is small and compact and works for me, I have a GPS 3plus, GPS V and now Quest 2 and use them all on diff. vehicles. and ATV.I recommed the Quest 2 over the 1 no need to carry a laptop anymore.Better then the Streetpilot and faster if you uncheck several unused maps.
