Garmin GPSMap 76S Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Garmin GPSMap 76S Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am not the type of person who buys a product without careful considerations. In fact, it took well over a week of comparing prices, technical data, research, and reading several reviews of various GPS units before I finally decided that the Garmin 76S is perhaps the best of the handheld on the market. My decision to buy the 76S was based on three reasons.First, I believe it is the best value for the money. Second, it has the most memory of all the handhelds. Finally, is simply it's durability.
It was on a Canada fishing trip when I first realized that I had to have one of these units. My friend and I missed a chance to go on a fly in fishing trip with some friends. However, being so determined, using a Garmin Map 76, we drove to Canada, then the Map 76 pointed us to an old logging road which we drove for about an hour.Once we got to the end of the logging road, we had to paddle a canoe for about 45 minutes across a lake. When we got across the lake we had to hike about four miles over a mountainous ridge to reach the edge of another lake where our friends radioed us and picked us up. The fishing was ever so great! But we really could have never done the trip without a GPS.
Anyway, back to the review.I narrowed it down to three units to purchase: the Garmin Map 76, the Garmin V, and the Garmin Map 76S.Consider the price.True, the Map 76 ischeaper but it does not have all the features of the 76S (the "S" stands for sensors like electronic compass and barometric pressure I think). Not to say these extra features are much greater than the MAP 76, but it is nice to have them just for the extra "fluff".
Secondly, the MAP 76 is only capable of downloading 8MB of information compared to the whopping 24MB of of the MAP 76S.This means that it would take three MAP 76 to equal the memory of one MAP 76S.To give you an idea of how much 8MB of information is, my friend could only load half the state of Colorado onto his MAP 76. As far as the GPS V goes, it holds 19 MB of information. If your are planning a trip by auto and you have only one destination, then the MAP 76 should suffice. But if you are planning a trip and have several destinations, you may find the extra memory in the MAP 76S to be helpful.
Finally, consider the durability. The MAP 76 and 76S are very durable. They both float! The GPS V is waterproof but only up to about 3.3 feet of water. This is fine if you just plan on wading. But mostly what I did not like about the GPS V was the crazy looking antenna that sticks out perpendicular to the unit.I just knew in my clumsy and reckless ways that the antenna would only last so long before I would break it off somehow on a mountain bike flip or something else.
So take into consideration the best value for your money, available memory, and durability and just plain common sense and purchase a MAP 76S.I hope this review will help you "find" the right choice!

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx Waterproof Handheld GPS Unit Review

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx Waterproof Handheld GPS Unit

Do not purchase from this "storefront" (sedative3145), the seller untruthfully claims to have this item (Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx Waterproof Handheld GPS Unit (GPSUnit w/Topo US 2008)) in stock. I received no communication at all from sedative3145, Amazon had to cancel my order. In order to get the equipment in time, I had to reorder it thru Amazon, costing me an additional $47.

Garmin MapSource Topo U.S. 100K Review

Garmin MapSource Topo U.S. 100K
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I'm not knocking the TOPO US too much.It is expensive and does not have high resolution but it fills a niche. If you need a TOPO map in a hurry, I suppose it is the best alternative.

I've had my Garmin Legend HCx for several months now.During this time, I've hunted for a reliable alternative to TOPO US, rendering 24K resolution and not limited to a few National Parks.

Looking really paid off.The best solution that I've found is the following:

* Free Maps from USGS Seamless Server (24K TOPOs as GeoTiff files) $0
* Any graphics editor program that can handle .tif format$0
* Mapwell (Basic) Google to find(includes raster/vector conversion)$45
* TrackMaker (free version) Google to find $0

Total: $45

Process:
1. Search, select, download GeoTiff map from USGS Seamless Server(15 minutes)

NOTE ADDED 4/2010:Mapwell Basic can now read coordinates on GeoTiff files, making steps 2,3, and part of 4 obsolete.

2. Review the .xml data, downloaded with the map to determine the extent of the map:Northwest and Southeast boundary.(5 minutes)
3. Open GeoTiff file in graphics editor.Save as new .tif file, stripping out the embedded geo data. (5 minutes)
4. Open the new .tif file in Mapwell.Add extent information from Step 2.Add graphics features and waypoints(optional).Run vectorization option, creating a new set of Garmin IMG files(10 minutes - more if you want to add your own art)
5. Upload new map set into Garmin.Mapwell has a great Garmin upload/download manager. No need to use Mapsource although you can use it to add Mapsource maps.(1 minute)

Time burned:36 minutes

TrackMaker (free version or licensed) is also a great product for creating tracks, waypoints, many more features. It also has a fine Garmin upload/download manager. So you can either load waypoints and features directly into the Garmin or embed them in the map itself while using Mapwell.

The only disadvantage that I've discovered in the process is that Mapwell works too well. That is, the vectorization of 24K maps produces superb quality maps that take 10-20 seconds to render in the Garmin (at 1 mile). The closer in you go, the faster the rendering.

Garmin GPSMAP 496 - GPS receiver - aviation Review

Garmin GPSMAP 496 - GPS receiver - aviation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even if you are not a pilot this GPS is the one to get. It contains both aviation and auto navigation. This gives you much more detail especially around airports when you are driving. You can also get real time weather reports. This is a great asset particularly if you drive in hurricaine or tornado prone areas. It also contains a topographical terrain database perfect if you are also a camper or hiker. So whether you fly, drive, hike or camp this GPS does it all.

Product Description:

Fly smarter and safer with the GPSMAP 496 on board. This "know-it-all" mini-MFD puts more power and information at your fingertips than any other portable handheld in the history of aviation. Similar to the GPSMAP 396, the 496 combines satellite weather with a detailed color map and terrain alerting, then takes it up a notch with even more high-end software and features. The 496 is a "must have" for any pilot.

Fly smarter and safer with the GPSMAP 496 on board.
Combines satellite weather with a detailed color map and terrain alerting.
The Terrain Page, available only in Aviation Mode, provides an overhead view of the terrain and obstacles beneath you.
The Map Page includes airspace boundaries, airports, navaids, lakes, rivers, coastlines, cities, and highways.
Preloaded with Americas navigation database. Click to enlarge coverage map.
View Your Position on Taxiways
Garmin SafeTaxi data provides detailed taxiway diagrams and position information for over 850 U.S. airports. Preloaded on the unit, this information helps you navigate unfamiliar airports with confidence and shows your aircraft's exact position on the field.Access AOPA Airport Directory
Easily look up taxi services, plan an overnight, choose fuel stops and more with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Airport Directory included on GPSMAP 496. It offers detailed information for over 5,300 U.S. airports along with the names and phone numbers of thousands of FBOs, plus ground transportation, lodging, restaurants, local attractions and more.Receive Altitude-Sensitive Alerts
When in the air, Garmin's new Smart Airspace feature makes it easier than ever to identify what airspace lies ahead. Smart Airspace automatically highlights airspace close to your current altitude and de-emphasizes airspace away from the current altitude, which gives you increased situational awareness.Enjoy Faster Update Rate
For added realism and safety, the 496 updates map data and "Panel" page instruments at 5 Hz, a significantly faster update rate that gives you a smoother, near "real-time" presentation of your aircraft's analog indicators, such as the HSI and turn coordinator.Enhance Situational Awareness
GPSMAP 496 features a built-in Jeppesen database, and an Americas, Atlantic or Pacific terrain database. It also includes an obstacles database for the U.S. or Europe. Using this information, the 496 displays your flight route over contour terrain mapping. The higher-resolution terrain database includes over ten times as much data as the 396's for even more visual reference. With information from the terrain and obstacles databases, the 496 monitors your current position in relation to surrounding terrain to provide alerts. Even customize your own minimum clearance levels to receive terrain cautions. The addition of private airports and heliports to the database provides even more navigation and emergency "nearest" options.Add Weather, Radio and Traffic
Make informed decisions based on weather and traffic with optional sensors and services. With a subscription to XM WX Satellite Weather and the included GXM 30A smart antenna, you'll have access to constantly-updated, high-resolution weather data for the U.S, right in the cockpit. Weather information includes Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD), Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs), Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs), Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), Lightning and Winds Aloft and can be laid directly over the 496's Jeppesen and topographic map databases. With an additional monthly service fee, GXM 30A delivers XM Satellite Radio to your aircraft. Add a Garmin Mode S transponder, and the 496 will also display TIS traffic alerts that identify surrounding air traffic.Navigate by Air, Land or Sea
Garmin's GPSMAP 496 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps. With nearly 6 million points of interest and road coverage for U.S., Canada and Mexico, plus Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and the Bahamas, City Navigator North America NT gives you everything you need to travel North America. Powered by NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality digital map data, City Navigator brings you the most detailed street maps available so you can navigate with exact, turn-by-turn directions to any address or intersection.Jeppesen Database Information
The GPSMAP 496 includes an internal Jeppesen database that provides location and facility information for thousands of airports, VORs, NDBs, and more. Updates to the Jeppesen database are available every 28 days online. The following information is provided:

Airport--Identifier, facility name, city/state/country, latitude/longitude, field elevation, available fuel types, runway designations and layout, runway surface, runway length, runway width, runway lighting, communication frequencies, and published approaches.
Weather--Frequencies associated with an airport (ASOS, ATIS, and AWOS).
VORs--Identifier, facility name, city/state/country, location (latitude/longitude), frequency, service volume (high, low, terminal), and type (such as VOR-DME, TACAN, and VORTAC).
NDBs--Identifier, facility name, city/state/country, location (latitude/longitude), and frequency.
Intersections--identifier, nearest VOR, radial and distance from nearest VOR, location (latitude/longitude), and region/country.
    ARTCC--Air Route Traffic Control Centers.
Airspace--boundaries (Class B, Class C, Control Zones, SUAs, and MOAs), controlling agency, and vertical boundaries.
    FSS--Flight Service Stations.

Americas Terrain Database

Enhance situational awareness with the Terrain Aviation Database. This digital database contains the elevation data which represents the topography of the earth. Using this information, your Garmin aviation GPS monitors your current position in relation to surrounding terrain to provide alerts--giving you additional time to make critical decisions regarding the flight path. Since Terrain data does not include man-made objects (towers, airports, VORs etc.), updates to Terrain data do not occur on a regular basis. The download process for Terrain updates is simple and convenient. Simply plug in your aviation device, download and go.What's in the Box

Garmin Carrying Case for GPSMAP 60 Series Review

Garmin Carrying Case for GPSMAP 60 Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this cover to protect my 60cs and it does exactly what I had hoped. The cover is elastic on the back and has a rubber-like material on the sides and top which enables you to get a good grip on your GPS.The front of the cover is made of plastic which extends the length of the view screen as well as the buttons.

I do however, have some gripes about the cover. The plastic cover can make entering data with the rocker pad tedious because even though you are pressing the rocker one way, the plastic causes the rocker to respond another way.I would rather have seen a separate cover for the buttons that was a bit more pliable. Also, you have to take off the cover if you want to plug your GPS unit into your computer via the USB cable. An opening in the cover would have made this easier.Lastly, the cover does not work with the handlebar mount for the 60cs.I really wish that it would because it is on the handlebars of my bicycle that I need the most protection. Therefore, I also bought some plastic screen covers to attach to the front face of the GPS to prevent it from getting scratched. However, the plastic screen covers and this cover do not play well and I have found that the cover pulls the plastic screen covers off.

The 60cs is a big investment.Despite the flaws in the cover design, it is definitely worth the extra cost of buying this cover. And pick up some plastic screen covers as well.

Magellan Meridian Gold Water Resistant Hiking GPS Review

Magellan Meridian Gold Water Resistant Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After much comparison of Magellan and Garmin GPS, I plunked my $$ down on Magellen.
Purchase decision - My impression from OTHER reviews and info for Magellan was great hardware, weak software but considering all pluses, minuses and price points and my usage: hiking, biking, back-country skiing, driving, boating, I chose a Magellan Meridian Gold, 32meg memory, and Mapsend Topo Sofware. Keep in mind there's a lot to choose from and yet none seemed PERFECT.
I've now had it for 2 weeks of vacation time biking, hiking, driving and land surveying in S. Utah. I monkeyed with this unit everyday, becoming completely familiar with it's usage.
The Good: Solid, durable hardware. The Gold has a great feel, is a good size and fits into any of my outdoor shirt pockets. It holds satellite signal extremely well in trees, 2nd story house, Utah canyons. Solid feeling buttons and rubber armoring are all great. Seems to do very well on batteries using roughly a pair or less a day. (I already have a charger and extra batteries from my digital camera and headlamps).
The Bad: Mapsend topo software at 1:100,000 is not really precise at closest level. However, the amount of built in software and downloaded maps are sufficient for my usage and I can imagine the memory and processor speed needed for 1:24,000 topos. Also on the positive side Mapsend and Magellan built-in software has a ton of info! It's great having altitude, moon/sun info, vertical trip projections, and much more.
The Ugly: Magellan's method of setting routes and backtracking is absolutely terrible for my usage. I am so annoyed with this, I would return it if I hadn't already used it 2 weeks. Here's the deal -
If you go out for the day and retrace your route exacty, or just set it for the car in general it works very well. But so does a few cents worth of flagging, popcorn, or the cheapest GPS available.
In reality, I usually go on a hike, bike, or ski in some type of semi circle and at some point want to return to my nearest backtrack point and THEN start backtracking. I want the unit to beep when I get near the next point and keep counting them down. In the canyonlands of Utah and backcountry skiing here in Jackson Hole, Wyoming this could really be useful.
However, this ONLY works easily if you exacty retrace your trail.
So... in everyday usage where you aren't going exactly back down your same trail (why have a GPS?) you have to build a route with the GPS and/or go through the user database and select the nearest backtrack points. And then if you don't keep manuallygoing through the database and selecting the next point, it will just keep pointing back at the last one. This is ridiculously time consuming on a day hike and makes operating the GPS the whole excecise instead of enjoying the outdoors. THIS SEEMS LIKE IT COULD BE EASILY CHANGED BY MAGELLAN BY SOFWARE PROGRAMMING.
More ugly: Really ugly.
Okay, so you set waypoints along your way using the GPS. Great, it does this well with 2 clicks. But THEN what??? It's back to the problem above.
It takes SEVEN screen operations and even more arrowing buttons to get a single one of these into a route. This completely insenses me. I could walk around circles for a day and eventually catch up to my wife and find the car in the time it takes to make a route! WHY CAN'T MAGELLAN MAKE IT SO I SELECT ALL THE POINTS FOR A ROUTE AT ONCE!!!???? How about storing waypoints in separate databases to start with? Or using two buttons in a computer-like fashion to highlight and select?
THEN: after I've got a route made HOW ABOUT if the GPS allows me to select manual or automatic retracing???? In other words, I want to go on a trip and set waypoints along the way. (Remember this is easy) Then, no matter where I am when I want to return to camp, I dump all my waypoints into memory in a few clicks, point the way to the nearest, and as I approach each new one, (automatic mode) the GPS beeps and rolls over to the next (lower number) waypoint.
If Magellan would make route setting and retracing easy, this would be a real must-have piece of gear for all my trips. At present, it's an electronic toy to play with while walking on flat ground or while my wife is driving the car. To give it the benefit of the doubt is also perhaps a good last resort safety measure so that if I get really lost I know where the nearest town is.
The annoying part is it is so close to being great, butMagellan's software programmers apparently never leave the office!
One last word - I find the Gold a great decision over the Platinum for using less batteries, having less to break, not needing re-calibrated everytime you change the batteries (daily) and knowing I haven't paid even more for some hardware that is mostly a toy because of the software behind it. Plus, I wouldn't go somewhere I could really get lost without a basic topo map and compass!
Three Stars overall for amazing toy that gives you info from satellites in outer space!
