Lowrance Endura Out&Back Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Lowrance Endura Out&Back Waterproof Hiking GPS

Not sure what was up with the first reviewer, but he is mistaken. This is a great unit!I bought it to replace a Garmin Venture HC for Geocaching and Waymarking ( see [...] ).Very accurate, easy to use as I have yet to even look at the included documentation or the full blown manual online. Went Geocaching today and being able to go paperless is amazing... I love the touchscreen! This is NOT for street navigation so look elsewhere if that's what you need. This is for hiking, hunting, geocaching, waymarking, etc.

Magellan, you need to get your act together.First you taunt us with the long and repeatedly delayed release of this "ultra" handheld GPS Magellan Triton 2000 Handheld Navigation System. Then you insult our intelligence with your useless, uninformed "Tech Support Staff".Finally, when the unit ships, it is only capable of displaying your location on the base map between interstate highways.Where are the street level maps? When will they be available?Useless, Bad deal. What are you guys thinking.
Tip: Call Magellan tech support BEFORE buying their product.
I'm giving mine back.

Lowrance iFinder Hunt C Waterproof Hiking GPS (Camouflage) Review

Lowrance iFinder Hunt C Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

I gave this gps as a gift but the reciepient loves it. The only disappointing feature was that when getting directions for somewhere it does not tell you to turn left or right or anything like that. It just shows a map from point a to point b. Not a huge big deal but for people like me who cant read a map to save a life, this was a disappointment. Other than that no problems.

Mobile Crossing WP105 Way Point 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Mobile Crossing WP105 Way Point 3.5 inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this unit primarily as small and portable Automotive GPS system. I also saw the merits of using it as a full function PDA capable of multimedia functions and other. In theory it seemed like a very good deal.
Upon first inspection I was excited. The PDA unit was slim and light (as advertised).
My excitement soon abated when I saw the monstrous concoction of a car mount that came with it. It was large, clumsy and ugly (it literally tripled the volume of the device) and it looked like a poorly engineered after market gizmo. For full functionality, it required three different wires connected on different sides of the unit. The satellite tracking module is anadd on that connects into the top mounted SD card socket. It also adds considerable bulk and weight. Once installed on the windshield, the whole assembly was flimsy and unsteady, it was an eyesore. Its size interfered with proper driving visibility no matter where I mounted it (I drive an Impala with very generous dashboard space, I shudder to think what this would look like inside a sub compact).
Functionally, the unit appeared to work very well as a PDA device, it has a decent CPU, the screen appeared clear and the interface quite usable.
Satellite acquisition was sloooow and unpredictable and contrary to their advertisement, the unit comes only loaded with main highways and absolutely no street maps.
The adds say "ready to use out of the box". . Furthermore, the manufacturers web site shows a tutorial video for the unit that shows how the unit is ready to use right out of the box.
Not true! You have to register the unit with the manufacturer before you are authorized to download any maps, the process is cumbersome and time consuming
I purchaser Model 105 which supposedly differs from model 100 in that it comes with the whole USA preloaded. That is bull, the two models are identical except for their registration code. Model 100 entitles you to load only one region for free, Model 105 entitles you to load the whole USA. But here comes the twist, neither model has enough memory to hold more that one or two regions at the time so ?...You figure the rest!
I carefully repacked the unit and shipped back to AMAZON.
I cannot objectively say how well the unit performs on the road, I never got that far.
In lieu of the deceitful adds and the primitive engineering of the mounting accessories I believe the unit is not worth any consideration.

Magellan eXplorist 200 - GPS receiver - hiking Review

Magellan eXplorist 200 - GPS receiver - hiking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these low-end GPS systems for use outdoors and was very impressed with the no-frills but quality menu design and simple and intuitive operation.

I've taken the Explorist on a number of trips and found that it did well when I was driving along with the GPS unit sitting on my dash or when wandering in the Sierras where I live. I took it on a trip to San Francisco with my girlfriend and we used it to navigate us back to my parking spot with zero difficulties. Don't let the low price fool you... Magellen did a nice job with this little beauty. I have dropped it a number of times, once it fell about 20 feet and survived with zero marks and works as good as new.

I've also used the unit to find my way on back-woods trails and to mark my positions and visited checkpoints. Takes a bit of re-learning to get used to setting checkpoints, but once you get the hang of it, this tool shines and does a good job of getting you back to where you started.

Last year, I used it to help chart our course when I was blocker for the company motorcycle group on our yearly ride. I don't drive motorcycles but drive my sports car as the water and luggage hauler and general navigation and electronics/communications support person. The Explorist came through repeatedly in showing us our exact location and kept us from taking a few wrong turns. I coupled the Explorist with pre-printed maps with coordinates printed on them so that it was quite clear where we were at all times.

While the color displays on GPS units are neat, the black and white display on the Explorist does seem to sip battery power lightly and I was getting about 2 - 3 days of use out of batteries with near constant usage. On the motorcycle trip I kept the unit powered down until I needed to check position, so for a ten day trip, I only changed batteries once. I'd recommend using the newer rechargables with 15 minute charge time to save $$$.

The only thing I wish was a bit different would be the little steel screw that you have to twist off to get the battery compartment open. Not sure why they make the little twist piece so hard to get big fingers around, but a small sharp tool or hook is all you need to pull that piece out and then you can twist the screw off. The big thing is to NOT lose that screw once you have the case apart!

I do thing it is a good investment to get a small leather pouch for the GPS so that you do bang it around too badly in rough terrain. Yes, it is extremely tough and well built, but hey, it cost $$$ and why not keep it looking good? ;>)

There is also a small hole at the top for threading a strap through so you won't lose the GPS. Suggest a bit of leather cord to push through and hook to a belt or whatever.

Perhaps one day I'll replace the GPS for a more capable unit, but for now, this thing really does the job and I'm pleased with it.I consider it an essential travel tool now.

5 stars - Well built and for the money, quite the steal. My hat is off to Magellen!

Lowrance Endura Sierra 000-0125-40 2.7-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Lowrance Endura Sierra 000-0125-40 2.7 inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an incredibly disappointing GPS. From the pre-release hype by Lowrance I expected a GPS that would match or exceed the top of the line handhelds from Garmin and Delorme. What was delivered was the most basic GPS, no auto-routing even though it ships with Navteq street maps, you cannot perform a find of points of interest except from your current positon on the GPS. You are limited to 30 track logs, but you have virtually not control over when and how they are displayed. Track logs are recorded using GMT dates and time. The highly acclaimed high definition super topo maps form Accuterra look like the topo maps you purchased from Garmin and other GPS maufacturers 10 years ago. The screen is virtually unreadable in indirect sunlight, even with backlighting turned up to the maximum. I can think of at least a half a dozen better handheld GPS's than this unit and they almost all cost less money. Until the price of this GPS drops below $300 and they get the bugs fixed I would look elsewhere for a GPS. This is one of the most overpriced under featured GPS's I've ever purchased.

Cobra GPS 1000 DLX 1.8-Inch Portable GPS Navigation Review

Cobra GPS 1000 DLX 1.8 inch Portable GPS Navigation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just recently purchased the Cobra GPS1000DLX and am extremely disappointed.

Pros: Hardware - The unit is compact (about the size of an average PDA)

Cons: Software (Both on the Unit and included software)
Hardware - Serial (RS232) interface

All I can say about the software on the unit is that it's functional.Other then that it will take awhile to get used to and is not very user friendly.

As for the included Rand McNally Street Finder software, it is obvious that this software was written around 1999 and has had no updates. Cobra/Rand are really trying to squeeze there pennies out of it as long as they can.Just trying to install the software on a computer with XP can be a challenge I've found.

*Warning* Windows XP SP2 will sometimes wipe out a file that this software requires to install. Let me save you some time, it's not listed as a known problem on there website, you have to call Rand McNally for the solution. (That's all Cobra will tell you to do)

*Recommendation - Bring some coffee and donuts with you before trying to install. Once the CD is inserted and the install program started, it took an average of 5 minutes before the pre-install program was done and the actual install program started.

Once the software is installed, it looks more at home on a Windows 98 machine and functions just as it looks. After creating a map and trying to download it the GPS unit it told me it needed the "Data" CD. (*Note - This seems more like something that should be part of the initial install) Let's just say that it also took me a little while to figure out that it wanted it in the first CD drive on my system, not the drive I used to install it. After getting the Disc in the right drive it started coping the files it needed (There was enough time for another coffee break).Once the transfer between the software the GPS unit began, I noticed the progress bar was barely moving (Yet another coffee break) so I used that time to reflect on the benefits of USB vs Serial and why Serial is OUTDATED for consumer products.

Once completed with that task I created a Route between two points. The software traced my route completely inaccurately (Lets just say my starting point was approx 15+ meters from the actual route, not just one point but the whole route)

This is good unit for a teenager or young camper or as a gift. Other then that, I recommend getting one of the other GPS units out there.
